Giving drivers a break

KERANG Lions Club were on the job, along with Kerang SES, over the King’s Birthday long weekend, doing their part to keep the road toll down on the district’s roads by manning the Driver Reviver caravan at Atkinson Park.

Operating since 1989, the Driver Reviver Australia program is powered by volunteers giving travellers the opportunity to take a break in their journey for a free cup of Bushells coffee or tea, an Arnott’s biscuit and most importantly, a chance to stop and revive so drivers reach their destination safely.

Peter and Mary Niall are two of the volunteers keeping the important service going and said there had been a steady flow of people since setting up at 9am on Thursday.

“The toilets are here and they can stop and have a cuppa while they are here, giving them a few minutes’ break,” Mrs Niall said.

“This morning an ambulance, doing a patient transport, stopped with the crew and patient getting out and having a cuppa before they got back on their way”.

Operating twice a year at the Easter and King’s Birthday long weekends, the Lions Club staffs the van from 9am until 6pm, when the SES takes over until midnight.
