Traditional debut a highlight for teens

ON Friday night eight young couples from Cohuna were introduced in the debutante ball organised by Cohuna Secondary College and Cohuna Neighbourhood House.

Maddy Black is 16 years old and decided to be a debutante because her older sister had previously participated.

“I really want to be a princess, and this is the closest thing to it,” Maddy said before the event.

“It has been an intense week of preparation and everything.

“I’m looking forward to the night.

“I am so scared, but I don’t want it to be over.”

Maddy’s debutante partner, 17-year-old Hudson Fountain, said he thought it would be a good thing to do.

“I’m a little bit nervous now but should be right by the end of it, but I’m really looking forward to the night,” Hudson said.

“It’s going to be a really good time.

“We have all the dances down pat and now we just have to belt them out.”

It had taken 10 weeks of preparation to learn six presentation dances.

Cohuna Secondary College principal Fiona Miller said the college had been holding the annual ball in conjunction with the Cohuna Neighbourhood House for 12 years.

“It’s a wonderful community event and teaches our young people a dying artform in these dances and it’s time to celebrate the youth, because they are great kids,” Ms Miller said.

“It is a mixture of Cohuna Secondary College students, students who work and one from Echuca.

“They really have done us proud.”
