Mateship to the fore

NATIONAL pride was celebrated on Sunday at Australia Day events across the Gannawarra Shire.

Mateship was evident as locals and visitors soaked up the long weekend festivities.

Dozens gathered on the lawns of Atkinson Park in Kerang and Garden Park in Cohuna, with other celebrations held in district towns.

An official citizenship ceremony was held in Leithcville this year, attended by Gannawarra Council mayor Garner Smith and chief executive Geoff Rollinson. The townspeople hosted a barbecue dinner.

In Kerang, a quintessential early morning barbecue was served by Kerang Rotary, with the official ceremony conducted by the Lions Club.

The council was represented by Cr Daniel Bolitho.

Local business owners were tasked with carrying the Australian flag to be hoist, before the singing of the national anthem and a small reflection of the country that stands today.

Guest speaker was Mal Johnson who recently completed the Variety Bash.
