Dedicated service to a tee

IN recognition of his remarkable 20 years of service, Alan Shields was awarded with a life membership to the Kerang Turf Club.

A long-standing member, Mr Shields is a much loved and highly respected member of the club’s community.

Known for his dedication and commitment, he has left a long-lasting impact on the Kerang Turf Club.

Reflecting on his time there, Mr Shields said the club was a part of both the community and himself.

“It has been a pleasure to be involved in this club,” he said.

“Being able to be involved in the various events over the years has been fantastic.

“I am proud to have been a part of this club.

“Going forward, the club is very fortunate to have new younger members to carry the club into the future.”

Mr Shields began a mechanics apprenticeship at 16, and in 1978 he took a significant step by opening his own business, Shields Auto Parts, in a small storefront on Fitzroy Street, Kerang.

During this time, he married and had three children.

In 1998, he expanded his business by relocating to Wellington Street, Kerang, where he became an Autopro franchisee.

With the help of loyal employees Rod Pasco and Lefty Wright, he grew the business into a success.

His life took another turn in 2002 when he met Karen McNeil, and through their relationship, he became involved in the racing world through the McNeil family.

In 2005, he joined the Kerang Turf Club committee, where his business expertise helped strengthen the club’s financial position.

His efforts played a crucial role in the club’s continued success.

In 2010, after three years as vice-president, he was elected president, a position he held for four years.

He was known around the club for his personable nature and strong leadership skills.

In 2018, he stepped down from his position within the club’s committee to pursue his dream of travelling across Australia.

He continued to dedicate his time to the club by volunteering countless hours to maintain the grounds.

Committee member Greg McNeil said Mr Shields’ contribution to the club was multi-faceted.

“Whether it was whipper-snipping or mowing, he made sure the area always looked its best,” he said.

“Alan’s legacy of service, dedication, and love for the Kerang Turf Club and his community, will continue to have a lasting impact throughout the region.”
