KERANG community members stepped back in time on Sunday when the Lions Club opened a time capsule created and sealed by Geoff Lynch in March 2000.
The envelopes contained letters for family and friends but many were for self send, to be reflected upon 25 years later.
Mr Lynch left behind a list of 72 names, representing families and organisations who had placed 88 envelopes containing messages and memories for the future.
He also included a poem to guide people to the secret hiding place, the Clock Tower in the heart of the town.
Lions club member Peter Niall said finding everyone was a challenge.
“Geoff left us with quite a task in tracking down all the participants, but with a little local knowledge and some research, we were able to reach out to everyone except one,” he said.
“Those who received packages were delighted and excited to receive their messages.”
Kerang resident Shirley Fowler said she was thankful for the opportunity to look back in time.
“It was lovely to read what our past selves wrote to our future selves, it bought back cherished memories,” she said.
St. Joseph’s Primary School principal Justin Colville said the eight envelopes left for the school, one from each classroom in 2000 will be of great interest to today’s teachers and students.
“For those who couldn’t attend, the packages were either taken by friends in the audience or will be delivered to the addresses listed on the original letters,” Mr Niall said.
“The afternoon finished with a wonderful afternoon tea prepared by the lady Lions and Lions’ spouses, and animated chatter about what may be in the envelopes when they get home to open them in front of family and friends.
“We had one envelope we are trying to find the recipient for, if anyone knows Ray (Doc) Choquenot, please contact the Lions Club of Kerang.”
