Trash and Treasure closed for maintenance work

COHUNA’S Trash and Treasure Op-Shop will be closed for the next few weeks as the building undergoes re-stumping and maintenance work.

Cohuna and District Historical Society secretary treasurer and archivist Jeanette Kline said the works will be more comprehensive than expected.

“It’s a much bigger job than what we thought it would be,” Mrs Kline said.

“White ants have eaten some of the floorboards up the middle, and because the tables were over them, we didn’t quite realise the extent of the problem.

“It was only when we walked past, and the floor started to bounce we realised how bad it was.

“At the moment, Trash and Treasure will be closed for roughly six weeks – but hopefully it will be less than that.

“We’ve got to make a decision on whether to keep the carpet, or take it out.”

The op-shop is a beloved fixture of the town, and Mrs Kline said people are already missing it.

“We’ve already had a few people come down, there was a man yesterday who brought his sister down from Darwin and wanted to bring her into the shop.

“It’s a bit of bad luck, the shop is very popular.

“We have the same regulars come in all the time, and I think a lot of the oldies really just come in for a chat to be honest.”

It was an all hands on deck effort to pack up the extensive shop, with more than a few sore backs the next morning.

“It was probably around six or seven people who came down to help,” Mrs Kline said.

“We’re applying for grants to cover some of the costs, but we have been saving for it.”

The adjacent historical archive building, which is a trove of meticulously kept town records including more than 62,000 index cards, is open as usual.
