Cemetery stalwart Robert Hampton retires

AFTER more than two decades voluntary service to the Kerang Cemetery Trust, Robert Hampton has retired.

The beloved community stalwart was presented with a certificate of appreciation from the Victorian Department of Health last week.

Kerang Cemetery Trust chairman, Trevor Wilkinson, said his friend will be sorely missed on the committee.

“I have that much admiration for the man, I don’t know how to express it in words,” Mr Wilkinson said.

“For what he’s done for this community; I don’t think people would realise the volunteer work he actually puts in.

“I’ve been associated with Rob all my life, he’s always doing the hard yards and doing a great job.

“He’s a fantastic community man, with his RSL and Legacy work as well – just one hell of a community man.”

Mr Hampton was a regular attendee at trust meetings, annual cemetery walks, and was lauded by fellow committee members as always stepping up when something needed to be done.

“Well, somebody’s gotta do it,” Mr Hampton said.

“Cemeteries are essential to communities, and many around the state and shire are run by trusts – who are all volunteers.

“There are meetings, organising, being in touch with funeral directors, working bees and making sure everything’s done right; kept neat and tidy.

“It probably is a thankless job, but that doesn’t worry us. We press on regardless.”

Mr Hampton was encouraged by a fellow member of the RSL to join the trust, and said he found himself still volunteering 23 years later.

“It is fulfilling, no one would stay here if it wasn’t, and if they didn’t meet like-minded people,” Mr Hampton said.

Mr Hampton said despite spending so much time in the cemetery, it doesn’t make him think of death.

“No, I don’t see it like that,” Mr Hampton said.

“Look at it, it’s a beautiful picture – grass, flowers blowing in the wind.”

Mr Wilkinson said there would be a significant gap left after Mr Hampton’s retirement, and that the Kerang Cemetery Trust is always looking for new members.
