Forest fire

FIREFIGHTERS battled for more than an hour to bring a bushfire in the Gunbower State Forest under control on New Year’s Eve.

Heat and dry conditions made it tough work for Country Fire Authority crews and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning personnel to control the 1.5-hectare blaze on Barton Track, near the banks of the Murray River, on Thursday afternoon.

DELWP issued an Advice fire warning to nearby residents just before 4.30pm, but there was no threat to communities.

Fifteen department personnel from Bendigo, Cohuna and Inglewood were joined by Country Fire Authority crews from Cohuna, Kerang, Koondrook and Leitchville in fighting the blaze.

A helicopter tanker was also deployed to assist with aerial efforts.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, while crews continue to monitor the blaze site.
