Students’ roaring ideas in public speaking competition

FOUR Kerang school were represented in the Lions Club of Kerang’s junior public speaking club final last month.

The club’s Jeff Jackson said the competition was put on hiatus for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This year, the students were well prepared and eager to participate in the competition,” he said.

The competition is offered to students in Grades 3-6. The students who participated in the club competition were nominated from their school level competitions which were conducted in late term two.

The schools represented at the club competition were Kerang Primary School, Kerang South Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School and Kerang Christian College.

The topic for the Grade 3 and 4 students was ‘A place other than in your home state, that you would like to visit’.

Competitors were asked to tell us why you would like to visit this place, how you would get there and what you would like to see and do when you get there.

The topic for the Grade 5 and 6 students was ‘Introduce a famous person who lived in the 19th Century’. You have been asked to introduce this person at a special event. Tell us a little about this person , what they did and how they became famous.

The senior students were also asked to respond to a short preparation question which was based on their experiences of home schooling during COVID lockdowns. They were asked to offer their opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of home schooling and things they learnt about themselves during this time.

“The students all acquitted themselves creditably and the judges commented on the high standard of their speeches,” Mr Jackson said.

“The judges were impressed with the quality and organisation of information presented and the delivery of their speeches including, confidence, use of voice and ability to engage the audience.”

The winner of the Grade 3 and 4 section was Ollie McKnight, representing Kerang South. The topic of his speech was South Africa.

The winner of the Grade 5 and 6 section was Madeline Berry, representing the Kerang Christian College. The topic of her speech was Clara Barton.

These students participated at the region level competition, held in Cohuna on August 7.

The judges for the competition were Kyra Laughlin and Sandra Westblade.
