Bible at core

WHEN looking at a school for child, some may wonder how a Christian school is different to any other.

At Kerang Christian College, Christian education means students are educated from a “Biblical world view”.

That is, looking at the world through the teachings of the Bible.

Principal Lance Davidson said these teachings were then woven into every aspect of learning.

“In the classroom, this can mean that when your child learns about the body in biology or health, they are not only taught the mechanics of the body, but they are also reminded that the Bible says they are ‘beautifully and wonderfully made’,” he said.

“In fact, that is a major focus of Christian education.

“The Bible teaches us that we are to love God, love ourselves and love one another. Therefore, our entire college staff work to promote this, and ensure each student knows they are loved and they are valued.

“This includes providing additional classroom support to meet the unique needs of students who require modifications to their learning.

“It also means providing a selection of subjects outside the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Humanities and Science. Prep to Year 10 offers Visual Arts, Physical Education, Information Technology and Performing Arts.”

Primary students also take part in Design Technology, which allows students to participate in a gardening-focused class that leads into cooking classes as they head into upper primary grades.

Primary students also have a special class on Friday afternoons called Buddies.

Mr Davidson said the Buddies program matched students with a student from another year level and together they take part in a hands-on experience. “This program is focused on building connections between the different year levels,” he said.

“In the secondary years, Year 9 and 10 students can choose from a variety of electives. Subjects have included Woodwork, Food Technology, Sewing, Landscape Gardening, and Systems and Engineering.

“In VCE, students have the opportunity to study a variety of subjects at the college, as well as options to study through Virtual Schools Victoria and video conferencing.

“Kerang Christian College also has the unique advantage of offering VCE-VET Sport and Recreation that, after completion, sees students with a Certificate III in the subject.

“Students who wish to take part in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship are also accommodated for so that they can continue their studies while working part-time towards a certification.”
