Golden run for primary students

STUDENTS from Kerang South Primary School have braved the cold to compete in this year’s cross-country event.

Faced with chilly temperatures, the children ran along the Riverside Park complex to earn points for their houses.

Gold House claimed this year’s honours, but principal Lyn Veall said she was impressed by every student that participated.

“We had a really good turnout this year,” she said. “We remind all the students how much their participation helps their house on the day.

“It’s all about just joining in. We don’t care if they finish first or last, as long as they are getting involved.”

For placegetters older than nine, the next stop is Mallee zone cross-country championship. More than 20 Kerang South Primary students will move on to the race.

“It’s a great opportunity for our older students,” Ms Veall said. “They get to run against students from other schools, with the chance to go on to the next stage.”

Ms Veall said sport and fitness were an important part of the broad curriculum at the school.

“Fitness is a big part of life here at Kerang South,” she said. “If you’re physically fit it makes a big difference on your wellbeing and your learning.”

“The kids here do track every morning, where they get the chance to run around a bit just to get their brains going.”

“Our students were also doing a lot of running in physical education and were working hard to improve and beat their personal bests.”
