Characters add colour to Kerang streets

THE flash of red and blue lights and the whoop of a police siren marked the start of the annual Kerang Book Week parade.

Local schoolchildren gathered at Kerang Primary School and, with their police escort, began the walk through the central business district, where the streets were lined with parents, carers, friends and a few interested tourists.

The parade has been such a tradition in the town that some of the teachers in the parade once marched as children in the very same parade.

Gannawarra Shire Mayor Charlie Gillingham said that the annual book parade was a great way for the children to get out onto the street and show off some of the stuff they have been working on at school.

“I want to congratulate all the parents, children and teachers that are involved,” Cr Gillingham said.

“The street is certainly crowded with people taking a lot of interest in this and it is a very positive thing for the Gannawarra community.

“There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to make sure that all goes well.

“We even have the sun shining today, so that is an indication of how good things are.”
