Rotary recognises primary students

ROTARY has given community awards to a number of Kerang students.

This year marked the tenth year Rotary Club of Kerang has offered the Rotary Junior Community Award program to Grade 6 students from Kerang Christian College, Kerang Primary School, Kerang South Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary School.

The awards were presented in front of a clubroom full of proud parents and students on November 23.

Rotarian Colleen Scriven said the four schools pledged their commitment to support the program.

“The tenth year has been another outstanding year for students completing this program, with 34 participants,” she said. “This is the largest number since the program began here in 2014.

“Thank you to the teachers at the schools for their support and assistance in helping the students achieve their goals, but also thank you to the Rotarians, including Travis, Gwen and Gerardine who along with myself also supported the students by offering their help on a regular basis to achieve their goals.

“The different style of commitment this year has continued to put a very different slant on the four areas of focus involved in this program, but somehow these students have worked their way through these focus areas, coming up with very inventive ways to achieve.”

The focus areas included community service, skills, physical recreation and social experience

Ms Scriven said the participants had to record their work in a diary as well as write a short report or create a poster of their experience.

Participants included:

  • Mikayla Boal and Haylee Chesnais (Kerang Christian College)
  • Sam Adams, Seth Beale, Harley Cartwright, Macey Hall, Max Sanders, Malahnie Clapham, Blake Williams and Mitchell Wilson (Kerang Primary School)
  • Paige Ballard, Tabitha Bramich, Brooklyn Buckow, Riley Ferrari, Emma Henery, Logan Pearson and Alex Tilley (Kerang South Primary School)
  • Zarli Anderson, Franchesca Bray, Parker Bray, Imogen Collier, Cienna Cordwell, Sophie Edwards, Ruby Fletcher, Laela Grayling, Austen Kelly, Macey McCurdy, Blake O’Halloran, Carla Peacock, Madden Povey-Walker, Luciana Schlitz, Logan Sutterby, William Turner andd Isabella Wise (St Joseph’s Primary School).

The focus areas

Community service: Helping other people either by attending an aged-care facility and reading with the elderly whose sight has failed. This year, students have helped out elderly neighbours by mowing their lawns, or even just chatting to them, as loneliness is very common for many elderly.

Skills: Learning a new hobby or interest, such as cooking, craft, with some students learning to play a musical instrument, such as the guitar.

Physical recreation: With an accent on participation as well as performance. This year students were able to achieve this goal much more readily than in recent years.

Social experience: Participating in a range of activities including a community celebration, a community meeting, a cultural exchange, a religious experience and an arts performance, some of which were in a virtual capacity.
