A history of hi-tech learning

KERANG Technical High School has a rich history, dating back to 1913, where it began as a higher elementary school.

Six years later, it was proclaimed as a high school, with the technical component added in 1973.

The addition of the technical component 51 years ago also resulted in a name change, and the school became Kerang Technical High School.

“Being the last so-named school in the state of Victoria, we have retained the name because it best represents what we offer students,” principal Dean Rogers said.

For more than half a century, Kerang Technical High School has successfully encouraged students to follow their career ambitions, based on their interests.

“As a Technical High School, we are able to successfully offer both an academic pathway for students leading to university and a trade pathway leading to an apprenticeship,” Mr Rogers said.

English, maths, science and the humanities have always featured strongly at the school and the is VCE results are testimony to this, with the school’s dux consistently receiving an ATAR in the 90s.

Mr Rogers said the technical wing has been a strong feature of KTHS and catered for students wanting to pursue subjects in woodwork, automotive, agriculture, engineering, welding, metalwork and hospitality.

“The facilities, the enthusiastic tech staff and the pathway offered by the technical wing have ensured that it is an important component of the school and community,” Mr Rogers said.

More recently, the school has undergone a refurbishment with both the red brick building and the library being upgraded to better reflect learning needs.

A new, purpose-built food technology wing was also added to cater for hospitality students.

“We are proud of this dual pathway and the results we have been able to achieve,” Mr Rogers said.

“This was recognised by The Age newspaper in 2022 where Kerang Technical High School was acknowledged as one of the most improved schools in the state.”

As a result, KTHS was named the Schools that Excel winner for rural/regional government schools for its sustained improvement in VCE results over the past decade.

KTHS has a proud reputation of providing a rich co-curriculum program.

“Our school is committed to an education that provides a learning experience that enables every child to achieve success within the framework of adhering to the values of respect, resilience, and responsibility,” Mr Rogers said.

“This is a journey we have embarked on after extensive consultation with the students, parents, staff and the wider community to engage students in their learning.”

The school remains student-focused and every effort is made to implement programs and events which cater to individual needs, with students encouraged to develop leadership skills and participate in the Student Voice Team, influencing school-based decisions for the betterment of both students and the school.

With so much to offer, Mr Rogers said the school was always open to visitors, adding the best way to find out about the school and its vast subject offerings was via a school tour.

“Kerang Technical High School is always welcoming and we are keen to show off what we have to offer,” Mr Rogers said.

Appointments for a tour can be made at any time by contacting the office on 5452 1062.

The Kerang Technical High School Facebook page is also another great way to get a sense of all the wonderful things the school has to offer.
