Cohuna keen to give preps a flying start

COHUNA Consolidated School is giving their 2026 prep students every opportunity to shine, well before the school year officially starts.

It’s all part of the school’s new Flying Start initiative, designed to make the transition to school as smooth as possible.

Principal, Ben Hawthorn, said preparing for the exciting leap to school was a big milestone for both children and families.

“While it may seem a long way off, as your child progresses through this year, planning for a positive start to school becomes important,” he said.

Mr Hawthorn also said Cohuna Consolidated School believed every child deserved the best possible start and they were looking forward to delivering the Flying Start program for the first time.

The unique program combines fun, learning, and development to meet the needs of young learners, ensuring they have every opportunity for success when they begin school in the new year.

“Our program has been thoughtfully designed to focus on building essential skills in a safe and engaging environment,” Mr Hawthorn said.

“The goal is to equip children with the emotional, social, and cognitive tools they need to transition smoothly into primary school with confidence.”

The program consists of eight one-hour sessions in term two and three.

Mr Hawthorn said students would take part in a variety of activities, including pre-reading and pre-writing exercises, such as letter recognition and story analysis, hands-on learning activities, and early numeracy through fun games and puzzles.

The program also focuses on social skills and confidence-building exercises, as well as teamwork.

“These activities will ensure that by the time they start school, children will feel confident and well-prepared for the exciting journey ahead,” Mr Hawthorn said, adding the program provided the appropriate tools, enabling students to feel comfortable and thrive in their new learning environment.

The program is open to all children and will run from 9am to 10am on selected Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout term two and three, commencing on May 21.
