RESIDENTS wanting to recycle their exhausted solar panels can now do so via Gannawarra Shire Council’s transfer stations.
Council has partnered with Solar Recovery Corporation to provide this free service, which is growing in popularity.
“The installation of photovolatic systems, such as solar panels, inverters and batteries, is occurring in record numbers nationally, including here in the Gannawarra,” council chief executive Tom O’Reilly said.
“With solar panels having an average lifespan of 21 years, it is important that systems are in place now to accept the recycling of these items, which are classified as e-waster and cannot be disposed of via landfill.”
Solar panels that are exhausted, damaged or soiled will be accepted at council’s transfer stations at Cohuna, Kerang, Lalbert and Quambatook for recycling.
“Solar Recovery Corporation will take all solar panels earmarked for recycling, separate all materials and pack them for re-use in different industry sectors,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“The ability for our community to drop-off their end of life solar panels for future recycling helps support our community continue to develop its circular economy processes.”
