Waste of recycling push

PEOPLE are being urged to use correct skip bins at Gannawarra Council’s transfer stations after a recent audit found waste items in recycling only bins.

Items such as timber and metal chairs were placed in skip bins marked for recycling purposes only.

“When full, our transfer station recycling bins are transported to Veolia’s materials recovery facility at Echuca for sorting. However, if non-recycling items are found in these skip bins, the bin is determined to be contaminated and all items inside are diverted to landfill,” chief executive officer Tom O’Reilly said.

“When this occurs, it is not just time consuming for staff at our facilities and at the materials recovery facility, but it erodes the good work undertaken by visitors to our transfer stations to ensure they are recycling items correctly.”

Items that can be taken to council’s transfer stations for recycling include cardboard, paper and cans, whilst household glass items can be placed in the purple skip bins located at each site.

“Signage is available at all of our transfer stations advising where items need to be placed, whilst anyone with any questions are encouraged to speak to our friendly staff on-site.”
