Prices ease on lower yarding

IN its first sheep sale of the month, Swan Hill Livestock Exchange had a yarding of 3214 head – 2870 lambs and 344 mutton.

This was down from the May 25 sale, when 5165 sheep were yarded, with 4648 lambs and 517 mutton.

The offering followed local trends, with prices easing by between $15 a head and $20 a head across most categories.

While most of the exchange’s regular buying group attended, they were operating conservatively.


Following are some of the sale highlights:

Heavy export $155-$175: The sale high $175 was achieved by Pira Farms, Pira, with other prices including $168 for B. Rogers of Wood Wood and $165 to L.A., L.J. & C.J. Threadgold of Nowie.

Export $115-$166: The top price went to Arentz Farms from Manangatang; $164 was reached by K.T. & J.J. Templeton, Manangatang and also by A.J. & E.A. Rinaldi, of Berriwillock; with $147 going to Danbury Park at Mellool.

Trade $80-$145: The top price went to Ashbre Park, Quambatook; $139 for J. & C. Pay of Murrabit; with A.J. & E.A. Rinaldi, of Berriwillock, getting $135.

Prime Light $70-$120: L. & R. Power from Ultima made the $120 and $114 went to M. Gadsden at Swan Hill.

Merino Lambs $80-$161: It was $161 for Hayden Farms at Piangil; $155 going to L.A., L.J. & C.J. Threadgold from Nowie; and $120 for M.T. & E.M. Maddy out of Barham.

Dorper Lambs $30-$124: With plenty of vendors, $118 went to R. & M. Culross of Moulamein; $102 for N. McCalman at Pental Island; $102 to S. & J. Dacey of Vinifera; $100 went to D. Semmler at Murrabit; and $92 for T. Spitty from Moulamein.

Hoggets $42-$92: Manangatang vendors starred here with $92 going to the Arentz Farms, with K.A. Oliver also making the same top price.

Mutton $65 – $86: This offering saw $86 achieved by Ninieuynook Farms from Quambatook; with $70 going to J. Challis of Murrabit; and $65 was the price for N. McCalman at Pental Island.

The next Swan Hill sheep and lamb sale will be held on Thursday, July 6, at 12.30pm.
