DETERMINED to make a difference for all who suffer through cancer, Kerang’s Treacy family are banding together once more in a bid to raise funds for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation.
This Sunday, Phil and Judy Treacy are encouraging anyone in the district to join in on a fundraising day when they open their garden to the wider community.
“We’re organising a barbecue lunch for everyone with cake stalls, donuts, different goodies to buy, as well as raffles and many different auctions throughout the afternoon to try and raise as much money as we can and kick cancer’s butt,” Phil said.
“Our family is planning to walk half a marathon for Unite to Fight Cancer at the end of the month, so would appreciate anyone and everyone to tag along this weekend to contribute vital funds, because together I think we can make a real difference for families facing cancer, like ours has.”
The cause is close to the Treacy’s heart due their daughter, Kelsey, being diagnosed with a stage 3B melanoma a couple of months after her 21st birthday.
“It was a bit of a shock, obviously I wasn’t really expecting to hear that I had cancer, especially being so young,” Kelsey said.
Now 24, Ms Treacy has been a big time advocate for raising money to find a cure for “the horrible disease”.
“I believe raising money is so important as cancer is extremely common, and these days everyone knows someone affected by it,” she said.
“Peter Mac is the biggest public hospital in Australia that’s dedicated to cancer treatments and has one of the biggest cancer research facilities, and my experience with them was nothing short of amazing.
“They saved my life and I will never forget that.”
