Sell-out performances

The Pro Rock Dance school staged its 13th annual performance day at the weekend, with 110 students taking part in two shows at Cohuna Memorial Hall on Saturday.

The students, aged from two to 60, performed ballet, hip hop, jazz and tap routines, inspired by a range of musicals including Grease, Jersey Boys and The Lion King.

This year the main event also featured the work of Michael Jackson, particularly the pop star’s musical The Wiz.

The event showcased the skills of the school’s younger students, while an adult student gala performance took place in the evening.

Dance school director Rebekah Sherlock said both events were a sell-out.

“We had some good reviews and some beautiful feedback,” Ms Sherlock said.

“They were really lovely shows and there’s probably been more support for the school this year because everyone’s trying to help each other out at the moment.”

Ms Sherlock established Pro Rock Dance after moving to the area from Melbourne 13 years ago, and the school has been popular ever since.

“It’s good to have something different,” Ms Sherlock said.

“It attracts kids who wouldn’t normally get involved in team sports.”

The senior classes are also very popular.

Ms Sherlock said most of the women involved came from farms and were also mums.

“For many of them that’s their one night out a week,” Ms Sherlock said.

“They dance for an hour then chat for another two. It’s a lot of fun and they say it’s a really good social outlet for them.”

Each year classes concentrate on technique in the first term, then start preparing for the production.

“It’s huge every year,” Ms Sherlock said.

“It keeps getting bigger and better every year.”
