Fire safety session

LOCAL firefighters will attend the Kerang community market tomorrow morning to spread the message about fire safety this season.

Monday marked the beginning of fire season in Gannawarra, and Kerang brigade volunteers will be out in force at Atkinson Park to raise awareness about restrictions and answer any questions.

Kerang Brigade captain Ramon Steel said dry conditions had created increased fire danger this season.

“It’s pretty obvious that if a fire starts this year it’s going to be hard to contain in the wrong conditions,” Mr Steel said.

The brigade was kept busy on Sunday evening with a grass fire which started in Lilac Avenue and burnt through to Haymans Lane, helped by a south-westerly wind.

The fire, which was burning in cracks underground, re-ignited twice on Tuesday causing firefighters to build an earth break around it.

The Kerang brigade was called to another incident in the early hours of Monday morning when a fence caught fire at the south end of town.

Market coordinator John Walsh said organisers hoped market goers would take advantage of the opportunity to talk to the volunteers.

“We would like to see a good response from people in the Gannawarra shire and beyond,” Mr Walsh said.

“The country is drying out fast and we must be prepared and informed on these matters.”
