United in their walk for cancer research

UNITING together to take one step further in cancer research and support, the Treacy family recently undertook a half marathon for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation’s Unite to Fight Cancer walk.

Raising in excess of $13,000, the family’s fundraising efforts placed them in the top 15 fundraisers across the state.

Placing 13th, Kelsey Treacy told The Gannawarra Times that the day was a “very inspiring and very beautiful 21 kilometre walk.

“Shout out to my family who would do anything for me, even a half marathon,” she said.

Overall, more than 2000 participants took part in the half marathon, raising more than $1.5 million.

The cause is close to the Treacy’s heart, with Kelsey being diagnosed with a stage 3B melanoma a couple of months after her 21st birthday.

“It was a bit of a shock, obviously I wasn’t really expecting to hear that I had cancer, especially being so young,” Kelsey said.

Now 24, Kelsey has been a big time advocate for raising money to find a cure for “the horrible disease”.

“I believe raising money is so important as cancer is extremely common, and these days everyone knows someone affected by it,” she said.

“Peter Mac is the biggest public hospital in Australia that’s dedicated to cancer treatments and has one of the biggest cancer research facilities, and my experience with them was nothing short of amazing.

“They saved my life and I will never forget that.”
