Assistance centre officially opened

GANNAWARRA’s new Veteran Assistance Centre was officially opened following the Remembrance Day service in Kerang on Monday.

Around 40 people attended the opening, held outside the RSL in Nolan Street, where the centre will have its headquarters.

Among attendees was Gannawarra Shire mayor Lorraine Learmonth, who spoke about her family’s service experience and gave the enterprise her blessing.

The initiative has been driven by the Military Brotherhood Military Motorcycle Club (MBMMC), in partnership with the Kerang and District RSL, and its launch was well attended by motorcycle club members.

MBMMC Vic North sub branch vice president Shane Mostyn, who is also the RSL sub group’s welfare officer, outlined the agenda for the centre.

The first priority is to help veterans apply for white cards which entitle them to free mental health services.

Mr Mostyn said while 48 soldiers had died in combat in the last 20 years, 500 service people had lost their lives through suicide in that period.

“The government has acknowledged that’s a problem and established this white card,” Mr Mostyn said.

“The Department of Veterans Affairs considers anybody who’s been in the military for a day a veteran who is entitled to the card.”

With a grant from the Gannwarra shire, the centre’s organisers bought a computer, which will enable them to help people with applications.

The centre, which has a pool table, will also offer companionship in a relaxed environment.

“As soon as you meet someone who’s ex-military, you form an instant bond,” Mr Mostyn said.

“And the mateship aspect is very important.”

Centre volunteers will also be able to access RSL fundraising to help address veterans’ needs.

Mr Mostyn said the project was in its early days but the wheels were now in motion.

“We’re getting the word out there,” he said.

“That’s the main thing.”
