Green party for a cause

NORTHAVEN Aged Care residents came out in beautiful weather last Friday for the home’s annual fundraising garden party.

So too did scores of local residents, who started arriving from 8.30am.

The event was a chance for family members and friends to catch up, browse the stalls and enjoy an outdoor lunch, with the Lions Club providing donuts and barbecue food.

Ten stalls sold different goods, from cooked food and preserves to bric-a-brac, plants and craft, including the handiwork of centre residents who had taken part in twice weekly knitting sessions.

Also on hand was the Cycling without Age bike, which was seeing some service.

Residents enjoyed the day, which included a singing performance by Kerang South Primary School students.

Northaven resident Theodora Newstead said she had “had a ball”, while her friend Sarah Smeekes said the event should be held more often.

Staff said the halfway mark of a fundraising target had been reached by midday.

Activities co-ordinator Lyn Steel said Northaven aimed to raise $4500 to buy a set of wheelchair-friendly scales.

The scales were needed “for the comfort and dignity of residents” and to meet accreditation requirements.

“It will mean we’re not lifting people in and out of chairs with lifters,” she said.

The equipment is also suitable for people using walking frames.

Ms Steel thanked the efforts of the various groups who contributed to the successful day.

“And nothing that’s been donated is wasted,” she said.

“Anything left over at the end of the day is donated to the Bus Stop.”
