Camp fundraiser

TICKETS are now on sale for a fun night out to raise funds for Camp Cohuna on December 7.

The evening event will raise money for the sixth annual camp at Treetops for children impacted by cancer.

Organiser Brooke Southern said she was acutely aware of the difficulties currently facing the local community.

However, she believed the community had adopted the cause, making a unique contribution and a huge difference to the children involved.

“What we’ve done over the last five years at the camp is amazing and what the community has done is amazing,” Ms Southern said.

“We also support local businesses by buying things for camp from the fundraised money.”

Among the businesses who have been involved with the camp are the Leitchville Hotel, Waffles, Lyndsey Quinlan’s face painting, Murray Mallee Wood Fired Pizza, Cohuna Waterfront Caravan Park and Cohuna Butchers.

Others that have donated services or goods include the Cohuna Patchwork Quilters, local dairy farms, Tree Tops and the CFA.

“Let’s keep going because we’re doing an awesome thing,” Ms Southern said.

CEO of Challenge – supporting kids with cancer, David Rogers, said 60 people had already applied for 20 to 25 places at this year’s Cohuna camp.

“Every year we have a wait list, it’s that popular,” Mr Rogers said.

“Our families love it and the kids love it.

“What the camp gives the kids is the opportunity to be free and believe that anything’s possible.

“They have outdoor experiences they might not otherwise have, that inspire them to achieve things.

“They learn that through hardships you can still do things.”

Mr Rogers said community spirit was a big part of the whole process.

“And things like the quilts the kids are given with individual names on them show so much love,” Mr Rogers said.

“The best thing is when the families come back and say their kid has changed.”

Ms Southern said this year’s fundraiser would be an upbeat occasion.

“I really wanted to have a fun night before Christmas, given that things are so dismal,” she said.

The event will feature cover band No Mistake, from Ballarat, with a “grazing table” provided by caterers Two Tarts from Echuca and desert available.

Drinks will be available at bar prices, with local volunteers staffing the bar.

A night for two at Crown Promenade in Melbourne and a five-course meal for four at The Junction at Moama will be auctioned on the night.

The event will be held at Memorial Hall in Cohuna.

Tickets are priced at $50, with bookings available individually or by the table.

Tickets can be booked via Trybooking.
