Investigation into gangway collapse

MURRAY River Council says an investigation is underway into the collapse of the gangway to the new pontoon structure in Barham.

The gangway was still under construction when it collapsed into the river on November 17.

The council is now working with the contractors to establish the reason for the collapse.

Murray River Council general manager Des Bilske said it would be the subject of a full independent review.

“It is important for the public to know that the structure was an approved and certified design and the companies that were involved in this project all have over 20 years industry experience in this field, so it is a significant surprise to all that there has been a failure,” Mr Bilske said.

“At this stage we are not aware if it is a design failure or a fabrication failure so an independent engineering company has been brought in to conduct a thorough review to identify the cause of the problem and how it will be addressed.”

The contractors delivering the project will also be conducting their own review into the incident.

The structure remains in the water and the area is closed to public access.
