Green light for specialist building

KERANG Christian College will build a new specialist building after receiving a federal government grant of more than $1.25 million.

The grant, from the federal government’s Capital Grants Program, which provides funding for non-government schools to improve capital infrastructure, will be combined with a contribution of $300,000 from the Christian College to see the project come to fruition.

The new building will include a science room, a design, woodwork and technology room, a science preparation room, two storerooms and a kitchen/canteen with an outdoor seating area.

Principal Wayne Barker said the school was “absolutely delighted” with the news of the grant, which he received from Member for Mallee Anne Webster on Monday night.

Mr Barker said the school, which has around 130 students, currently has a portable science room but needed a dedicated facility.

“The board has been working on the plan for about two years,” he said.

Construction of the new building is expected to start in March and be completed in 2021.

The project will involve relocating portable buildings and some play equipment.

“There will be a degree of disruption while it’s going on,” Mr Barker said.

Dr Webster congratulated the school on its funding success.

“Kerang Christian College has a wonderful school community, and these new facilities will further enhance the learning environment,” she said.
