Gumboots fly at Gunbower

SUNDAY’S Gunbower Pacing Cup offers free admission and a day of family entertainment in the lead-up to Christmas, with Santa visiting the course.

Organisers hope for a turnout of over 1000 people to enjoy the eight races, including feature events the Trotters Cup and Pacers Cup, along with two pony trot races.

There’ll also be a waterslide, and monster crocodile to entertain younger members of the family.

Rich River Golf Club will offer professional tips at a temporary golf hole, with certificates up for grabs for those who get nearest the hole.

The now annual gumboot throwing contest is on again, with prizes to be won and opportunities for males and females of all ages to participate.

Gumboots are provided and there will be a junior section, and a handicapping system at senior level to ensure competition is fair for all.

Gunbower Harness Racing Club committee member Adam McGillivray explained how patrons can upgrade their level of comfort and be fed and refreshed at an affordable price.

“We’ve got our VIP area which is 60 bucks a head, with everything included. You get your own shaded area, drinks, chairs, umbrellas and a salad lunch.”

If you fancy a flutter, but don’t back your ability to pick a winner there is an alternative.

“We’ve got the annual Punters Club where anyone can throw 20 bucks in and have two professional punters put all their bets on for the day,” Mr McGillivray said.

Those who want to take charge of their own bets will have the choice between a bookmaker and a TAB outlet.

There will be musical entertainment in the form of a guitar-playing singer.

Access to the track will be easy with the new bridge to Gunbower Island now open.

Free return buses will travel to the track from Echuca and Cohuna.
