The gift of giving

TARGET Country in Kerang is again partnering with UnitingCare Australia this festive season, to raise funds to help local families in need.

Di Parker, from the Uniting Church in Kerang said the store had been involved with UnitingCare Australia Christmas fundraising for at least a decade.

“Target has really taken this on as their main community service,” Ms Parker said.

For the second year, Target is selling $1 cardboard baubles, with fundraising efforts going to UnitingCare to redistribute throughout the area.

Target Country Kerang assistant store manager, Wendy Hal,l said each customer was asked if they would like to buy a bauble.

“The money goes back to the people who are in need locally, and most of them are happy to do it,” Ms Hall said.

Target is also accepting donated gifts, which will be distributed by Mallee Family Care.

“If people are buying gifts for kids, or for anyone, they might buy another one to donate,” Ms Hall said.

“They can also bring in their own presents, either wrapped or unwrapped.”

Ms Parker said some families in the community were forced to choose between paying bills, putting food on the table or buying presents for their children.

“By purchasing a $1 bauble at the checkout at Target, or donating a gift for a child, you can support a family in this community and help to make a happier Christmas,” she said.

UnitingCare Australia is one of the largest non-government providers of community services in Australia, with more than 1600 community service delivery sites across the country, reaching more than two million people annually.
