Bridge works set to begin

THE Quambatook-Boort Road bridge will be closed from Monday as works to upgrade the structure begin.

The Gannawarra Shire Council has issued a reminder to drivers that detours will be in place around the bridge, which spans the Avoca River between the Quambatook township and the Quambatook Recreation Reserve.

It is anticipated the road will be closed for approximately eight weeks, with detours in place via Ninyeunook and Quambatook South roads as the works occur.

During this time the V/Line bus service that runs through Quambatook will also be diverted via Quambatook South Road, with the pick-up/drop-off point for the Boort District School bus to be temporarily located to the Quambatook Recreation Reserve.

The bridge is due to be replaced with a two-lane concrete structure that will be able to withstand higher mass limits.

The council said the replacement bridge would provide “an efficient, safe and effective first and last mile transport route for producers, including reducing the number of required heavy vehicle movements and travel times, thereby meeting required freight demands to processing facilities”.

Gannawarra Shire Mayor, Cr Lorraine Learmonth, thanked the community for their patience during the process.

The bridge replacement project has been funded by a $423,333 contribution from Regional Roads Victoria’s Fixing Country Roads program and is part of the council’s $10.877 million capital works program, the council said.
