Promise to wildlife

FIRST Kerang Cub Scouts were again getting active for a good cause last week, making boxes and stands for the care of animals injured in Victoria’s bushfires.

Leader Carmel Tyers said the boxes, which are fitted with a kind of “sleeping bag”, are for injured and baby possums while the stands are used for baby kangaroos.

“The baby kangaroos hop in and out of them,” she said.

“The carers sit them inside or outside in the sun with their bags over them when they’re getting a bit bigger.”

Ms Tyers said the cubs loved working on the items.

“They all had a go at the electric drill and all did some hammering,” she said.

The men’s shed cut the wood to make the stands and boxes and helped the group nail them together.

“We’ve left them there so they can check them and maybe add some more nails,” Ms Tyers said.

The project was carried out as part of a cubs bushfire relief program.

“They’ll get a badge for bushfire relief,” Ms Tyers said.

The items, made from wood donated by cabinet maker Brett Makeham and the men’s shed, will be given to the Jirrahlinga Centre at Barwon Heads, who will possibly distribute them to other wildlife shelters.
