A NEW deputy mayor has been elected at Murray River Council.
Cr Nikki Cohen was appointed to the position following an election at the council’s meeting on Tuesday.
With the New South Wales Government postponing local government elections in 2020 due to the Coronavirus, the council will continue for another year under the leadership of current mayor Cr Chris Bilkey together with his new deputy.
Cr Cohen nominated for the role in accordance with a council policy that deputies be elected on a 12-month basis.
The Moama ward councillor was elected unopposed, replacing Cr Alan Mathers, who had the position for the previous 12 months.
Other councillors will continue to hold their current offices until the rescheduled elections are held in September next year.
Meanwhile, the council’s director of shared services, Ross Mallett, who resigned following a motion of no-confidence against him, is in his final week at the council.
The motion accused Mr Mallett of poor communication and insensitive handling of the council restructure following the merger of Wakool and Murray Shire councils.
It is understood that a replacement for Mr Mallett has not yet been found.
