BEACH WORK ON TRACK

COHUNA’S new beach is set to be complete by mid-October, with work now underway on the final feature, a beach wall.

The structure, around 10 inches wide and a couple of feet high, will create an edge between the grassed area and the sand, and will be a good place to sit, Gannawarra Shire Council director of infrastructure and development Geoff Rollinson said.

The footings for the wall, which runs both sides of the jetty, have already been installed.

“Because it’s all modular they’ll put the (sections) in pretty well all in a day, then wire them up,” Mr Rollinson said.

Lighting will also be installed to illuminate the area.

Several other features are under development in the Apex Park area, including the skate park extension, which is currently out to tender, a new shelter, and the All Abilities Park, which will replace the current play area.

Work is also underway on the installation of a “traffic-calming” roundabout at the intersection of Cohuna Island and Tennis roads and the sealing of the road to the entrance of the Cohuna Recreation Reserve and of the Apex Park car park, with extra parking spaces to be created on the western side of Cohuna Island Road.

The council has sought architects’ quotes for the next stages of work on the overall $3.4 million Cohuna waterfront and CBD connections project, which has been supported by $2.7 billion from the State Government’s Building Works package.

Community input will be sought in coming months on other features of the redevelopment.
