Kids keen to start playing basketball

BASKETBALL-STARVED juniors in Kerang and surrounds may yet hit the boards this year, with Kerang Amateur Basketball Association (KABA) set to consider starting matches in December.

“I’ve spoken to a few parents that have said their kids are keen,” new KABA president Greg Brady said.

He noted that with insurance cover having been extended until May 2021, parents won’t be hit with prohibitive costs to get their children on court.

However, Brady said before making any firm plans it was necessary for KABA to determine how much interest exists in getting an abbreviated season underway.

“We need to find out whether we’re going to have the numbers or not,” he said.

Brady believes a six to eight week season may be possible.

“We’re hoping to get a season where maybe we could have three weeks in December and four or five weeks after school holidays finish,” he said.

That would enable families to enjoy time away after a challenging year.

Mr Brady thinks finals may be confined to one week.

At this stage he said matches may be held on Monday or Tuesday nights.

Discussions will take place when the new KABA committee meets on Wednesday, November 25 to consider the prospect of getting oncourt action underway and how that may be implemented.

In the meantime, Brady plans to gauge the level of interest from junior players and parents through the Kerang Amateur Basketball Association Facebook page.

Although the Victorian Government has said it currently expects to allow competitive indoor sport for all age groups from November 23, Brady isn’t hopeful there will be sufficient support for a senior season.

KABA’s committee is likely to consider other possibilities on the senior front.

“A three-on-three tournament might be worth looking into,” Brady said, suggesting that could take place over a weekend or a couple of nights.
