Swan Hill stadium transformed into flood relief centre

ABOUT 100 beds are being set up at the Swan Hill Basketball Stadium as it is turns into a flood relief centre.

Air mattresses, bedding and pillows were the supplies flown into Swan Hill on Monday as the stadium was prepared to house people from the Gannawarra area, with Kerang expected to be isolated by floodwater for up to two weeks.

Swan Hill Rural City Council director of community and cultural services Bruce Myers said people of high needs who present to the relief centre will be dealt with on an individual basis and arrangements were being made for people in caravans.

“We may find that people might come with their caravans and things, so we are making arrangements for where they can set up where there are showers and toilets and dump points and things,” Mr Myers said.

“We are just working our way through it all.”

While there weren’t many people at the relief centre on Tuesday, it was expected a few more may come over the next few days as flood waters in Kerang rise.

“Health services over in Gannawarra are encouraging people to come this way, so we will do our best to look after them,” Mr Myers said.

“This is a place for them to stay – they can come and go, we don’t expect them to hang around here all day, but this is a place where they can leave their gear and have a sleep and get fed.”

The Salvation Army food truck was also on-site to provide food to those at the centre.
