Season’s greetings

THIS is the last issue of the Gannawarra Times for 2024.

There will be no papers published on Tuesday, December 26, or Tuesday, January 2.

The first 2024 issue will be on Tuesday, January 9.

Following the devastating floods in October and November last year, Gannawarra Shire was eager to welcome in a new year, which quickly brought rising interest rates, skyrocketing inflation and a cost-of-living crisis with no immediate end in sight.

The flood recovery – especially road repairs – has been painstakingly slow. Roads that should have been repaired months ago are causing more damage than the flood itself. As the wait for money and repairs grows longer, the potholes get deeper and wider.

But despite the doom and gloom you’ve seen in the media, and sometimes in these pages, there is confidence in the local economy and tourists have returned in droves to this majestic pocket full of nature-based wonder and friendly smiles.

Many have seen just how spectacular the Gannawarra is. So much so, they have decided to uproot their families and move to northern Victoria. Business precincts in all our major towns are overflowing with jobs and new residential estates are being built along the border.

The housing shortage continues to cause pain for big employers in the shire, but agency partnerships are unlocking doors.

We have a lot to celebrate in 2023, with many council-led projects off the ground and many more to see the light next year.
