Gunbower water warning, Cohuna now safe

AS a boil water advisory was lifted in Cohuna, neighbouring Gunbower residents had one imposed because of the detection of E. coli in the supply network.

Coliban Water issued a statement on Thursday, advising the water in Cohuna was safe to drink.

“On November 8, we stopped providing water to some of our ‘supply by agreement’ customers to secure drinking water supplies in preparation for any possible impacts to our Cohuna Water Treatment Plant from poor raw water quality,” the rural water supplier said.

“The decision … resulted in lost pressure within the affected network and we may have had ingress.”

The supplier said the advisory was now lifted after flushing the supply system.

“Water quality testing has confirmed the water supply is safe,” the statement read. We recommend customers flush internal taps for two minutes to draw fresh water into their internal plumbing.”

However, Gunbower has been advised to boil their drinking water until further notice.

“This advisory has been issued following routine sampling which has detected E. coli in the supply network, indicating that the safety of the drinking water has been compromised,” Coliban Water said.

“Coliban Water recommends that customers should bring water to a rolling boil before being used, by heating the water until a continuous and rapid stream of air-bubbles is produced from the bottom of a pan or kettle. Kettles with automatic cut-off switches are suitable. Variable temperature kettles should be set to boil.”

“Consumption of unboiled water can cause gastro-like symptoms. If you experience any of these symptoms, please contact your GP and inform your GP of this advisory.”
