Preferences counted

To The Editor,

My preferences were counted yesterday and I am thrilled to see that Andrew Gibbs has taken my place as a Councillor of Yarran Ward.

I am more than confident in Andrews’ ability to bring the highest strategic level conversations to the table for the advancement of Gannawarra Shire. Unfortunately, with such a short timeframe until the next elections and the lack of desire for the current Council to manage future strategic direction, this could be a wasted opportunity.

In my time as a Councillor, I have witness firsthand the deplorable way this current Council has treated Andrew, especially in relation to him bringing an upgrade and investment to the Cohuna Airport (at his and other locals expense) over the last decade. As a resident of this shire, behind closed doors, he has been accused of forging a letter and signature of a Member of Parliament, and accused of earning a three figure “payout” if any grant for the Aviation Club was successful, from both current and former Mayors. This was all proven to be untrue and never was an apology offered. The CEO, also couldn’t resist sledging this man’s reputation, criticising the Aviation Clubs initial business plan, yet it was accepted by the Federal Government! The CEO and Councillors never crossed referenced ANY of the named government contacts that supported the proposal in 2018. A vote was conducted behind closed doors to not support the proposal. Andrew has been vocal in his criticism of this Council, but it has been justified in the fact that no other member of our community, who actively tries to pursue large scale projects has ever been treated in such a defamatory way by those elected to represent their community.

Worksafe recently conducted an investigation into alleged bullying conduct of Councillors at Gannawarra Shire and although the CEO and Mayor are stating that “no problems here”, I would suggest to Andrew that he look into the Worksafe Entry Report where there are four recommendations to improve the Councillors Code of Conduct. The Inspectorate was also named by the CEO as an option for a Councillor who is being bullied. In my experience this is not the case. Perhaps aim to remove the “gagging” clause added by this Council in 2018, so accountability and transparency is encouraged. This Council has attacked Andrew’s reputation on numerous occasions and this has caused untold stress on his family who live and work here. I would recommend you have the Code of Conduct recommendations actioned prior to signing as nobody deserves to be treated this way while serving to bring their best to the table for the community.

I hope the community get behind you and I wish you all the best Andrew.

Sonia Wright
