Vote for change in Yarran ward

I have nominated for the Council elections in the Yarran ward

The past four years is not who Gannawarra is, please vote for change.

I was a member of a stable and respected council for 13 years.

Cohuna airstrip needs to be managed well so that it remains suitable for the air ambulance to land, as well as somewhere for people to shelter in.

Irrigation water is the other big issue and I am still a member of the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District Leadership Group, which continues to lobby government to secure future water supply in the Torrumbarry district. I’m also concerned about the health of the forest and how it is irrigated too often.

Kow Swamp: I have and will continue to work to restore and stabilise the foreshore of the Leitchville Lions Picnic ground at Kow Swamp, ensuring its continued use into the future; it is worth about $1.3 million in tourism.

COVID-19 has and continues to create issues in our community. Council will need to support the community to ensure the recreation areas are available to use safely and support initiatives that not only look after the community’s health and wellbeing, but hopefully help the economic recovery of the Shire.

Neville Goulding,

Yarran ward candidate

NSW motion disallowed

IT is good to see the battlers rise and have a win for the Murray Darling Basin, the environment and the Darling River.

It is a small but very powerful step for us all. Every irrigation farmer in the basin must be on a equal footing, that is to have proper water allocations and metering.

As we here in Victoria are starting to wake up from our forced hibernation I truly lament the serious lack of decent politicians and bureaucrats we have.

The Victorian COVID hotel fiasco is a clear case in point. It has led to the deaths and serious illness of many Victorians, yet no one wanted to take the blame.

The message to the bureaucrats and politicians is simple: take responsibility for your decisions or get out. You are doing all Victorians and Australians a massive disservice by staying.

Please stay safe and help each other out. That is what we Aussies are great at.

Peter Gilmour,

Cobram

Nationals need to work harder

IT’s interesting to see the NSW Nationals deciding to cross the floor of parliament over the proposed planning laws designed to protect koalas.

In fact, I support their position on this issue. We all want koalas protected, but we also need to make sure we protect the Aussie farmer, who is someone The Nationals in the southern parts of the state have forgotten.

So why are the Nationals prepared to stand up to the Liberals on the koala laws, but have been missing in action when it comes to effective water policy?

Under their watch we have the disastrous Murray-Darling Basin Plan which continues to adversely affect our farming communities in the Southern Basin.

They have allowed floodplain harvesting to continue, protecting those in northern parts of the state, but at the environmental and economic expense of the south.

They refuse to stand up to the city-based Liberals – many who would be better suited as members of the Greens – on issues like timber harvesting.

Why didn’t they threaten to cross the floor of parliament to protect our forestry workers?

The Nationals have lost seats in rural NSW that until recent times would be considered unlosable.

Why can’t they see that this has occurred because they are not working hard enough for rural communities?

I applaud those in the National Party who have stood up to Premier Berejiklian over the koala regulations and would encourage them to broaden their agenda and start looking at other important areas, especially water policy.

Because until they start doing more for our regions they will not regain the support that has been lost.
