Help needed to stage Kerang Show

THE 137 edition of the Kerang Show is being prepared for October 9, 2023.

This may seem a while away, but organising such an event does take time.

The Kerang Show is both an iconic part of, and the oldest event in our community.

The committee has applied to the Gannawarra Council for reverting the public holiday from Melbourne Cup to a Kerang Show Day holiday.

When the Melbourne Cup Day holiday was set, it was to be for a number of years and then the Kerang Show would have the holiday.

That time was up last year but did not eventuate.

Also, to hold our Show, we need approximately 80 volunteers. This is getting harder with community members unable to help due to work commitments.

For each Show, we need volunteers to man the gates, as well as stewards for the pavilions, horses, and other stock events. There is the old saying, “many hands make light work”.

More than five years ago, we made the decision, due to lack of volunteers, to revert from a two-day Show to one day.

This was due to the council removing our Show holiday, and therefore not having enough helpers.

We are asking for community support as we set forward to the future. We hope that Gannawarra Council will support this change.

The society desperately needs new committee members who are willing to give their time to this town’s major event. With this will come new life and new ideas into the running of the Show.

Please, if you wish our Show to continue, write to the shire before December 23 supporting a Show holiday as we wish for the Show to continue into the future.
