Dear Editor
Re ‘Hunt Anger’ (GT 6/8/24), it is frustrating and disappointing that we have gone through the rigmarole of reviewing regulations for native bird shooting when Labor’s own 2023 inquiry recommended a total ban on the activity.
Instead of perpetuating a cruel bloodsport, a responsible government would be focusing on implementing the recommended ban, and prioritising conservation and lucrative ecotourism.
Alarmingly, the ban was rejected because the government caved to pressure from unions, raising serious questions about their undue influence on Labor decision-making.
Considering recent allegations of corruption in the CFMEU, there should be a thorough investigation into how the unions strong-armed the Premier, and what implications this has for the integrity of our democratic processes.
Our native birds, wildlife volunteers and regional communities deserve restitution.
Sincerely
Alyssa Wormald
