THE fish are dead, the trees are dying, the cracks are a mile long, we no longer hear the birds song.
This is the ghost of the Avoca River in Quambatook calling.
The people here wanted a weir to store some water. We were told we had to have a walking track as well. Then they found some precious flora (which are now dead) so they couldn’t possibly go ahead with that project.
OK, very sad and a worry that we must be the only place that is growing these precious plants as all other localities seem to have got walking tracks and water.
Let’s move on a few years after this decision to concentrate on our original project for water.
Some clever person who has been fighting us all the way with this has sent in water analysis for the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action to analyse.
Oh, now they are worried about the wrong salinity in weir. Obviously death to the river over summer is best for the environment and people’s sanity, recreation, and the wildlife.
