Have your say on future of Cohuna Community Bus

I AM writing to the residents of Cohuna and Leitchville on behalf of the Cohuna Community Bus Committee.

We would like to inform and engage with the communities of Cohuna and Leitchville about the future role of the Community Bus.

At our recent committee meeting on April 29, we decided that the committee will continue to operate the Community Bus until December 2026. By that time, we will determine whether to keep operating the bus or consider selling it and winding down the committee.

Our 16-seater Toyota Coaster bus features an efficient and compliant hydraulic lift, making it the only accessible community vehicle in the Cohuna and Leitchville area. Although the vehicle is nearly 20 years old and in need of replacement, we have substantial financial reserves available. However, the current committee members believe that ongoing management may not be feasible, so investing in a new asset might not be the best course of action.

This situation could potentially end the 20-plus-year history of our Community Bus service to the local community. The key reasons for considering closure include the significant burden on volunteers involved in running a service with declining usage and financial sustainability.

Therefore, our committee values and seeks input, recommendations, innovative ideas, support, and commitment from the broader community regarding the future of the Cohuna Community Bus.

Max Fehring

Chairperson of the Cohuna Community Bus Inc
