Giving the little guys a go

I READ and was very impressed by the article Giving the little guys a go (Gannawarra Times, May 20) about Mr Trevorrow’s farm setting aside a waterway for birds, fish, reptiles, insects and flora endemic to the area.

I commend the journalist, Edmund Coleman, on excellent and balanced journalism which was not over sensationalised nor inflammatory.

Mr Trevorrow is to be highly commended for his love of country and attempting to revert a part of this beautiful pocket of Victoria back to the original floodplains Kerang and surrounds were made up of originally.

The North Central Catchment Management Authority are also to be resoundingly applauded for all of the very hard work they do in protecting and maintaining such beautiful, magnificent wetlands.

I disagree, however, where Mr Trevorrow states: “l don’t profess to be a Greenie”.

There is no shame, even if he is.

His obvious love of the land, the animals and flora equates to someone in love with the environment and is willing to, indeed, “giving the little guys a go”.

I am a Greenie and am not at all ashamed to admit to this, however, l am most definitely not a “Greenie extremist” but like Mr Trevorrow, have a great love of Kerang and surrounds and take great delight in birdwatching, nature-based photography and living in Mallee country where the sunrises and sunsets suppress even Kakadu and Central Australia.

I love to show friends and visitors Victoria’s Kakadu and feel truly blessed to live in big sky country to see wild ducks, the very iconic Kerang ibis waterbirds of all descriptions, rakali, reptiles, insects plus the flora so very special and unique to Kerang.

I am opposed to duck shooting, however, as l have seen and been at various wetlands and witnessed 30 years of the most appalling cruelty that tragically continues right up to the present.

I do know some locals that hunt ducks and take them home to eat.

Whilst l am very much opposed to duck shooting, l do know the difference between those who come from Melbourne and Bendigo and go out shooting ducks for kicks and leave birds mortally wounded and dead, left to rot on various wetlands, as opposed to locals who will take the birds home to eat.

I wish Mr Trevorrow all the very best in his future endeavours in protecting plus maintaining and expanding in “giving the little guys a go”.

Thank you too to Edmund Coleman’s terrific write up of this wonderful article.

Kate Bossence,

Kerang
