HEAVY weekend rainfall has caused numerous problems for district farmers, ranging from flooded salt drains to stranded cattle. The weened average ranged from 75mm to 80 mm – equivalent to 3 inches to 3.25 inches.
Murrabit and Myall were the worst hit with 105 mm of rain and farmers reported cattle standing in up to 30 cm of water.
Gonn Crossing received 93 mm and water lay over much of the ground. The height of the Murray River was the highest some had ever seen at Koondrook and Gonn Crossing.
Koondrook received 82 mm and some farms were flooded severely with up to half of some properties under water. Milk production was down and there was more water most had ever seen,
Thirty-one mm was recorded around Benjeroop with farmers using pumps to relieve drainage problems.
A quarter of annual rainfall was recorded in areas around Gunbower and paddocks were inundated after 32 mm fell.
Lake Meran received 53 mm.
The Horfield farming district recorded 25.5 mm was received causing salt drains to overflow and many tracks were flooded.
Leitchville received 26 mm and low ground was covered with flood water and salt drains filled.
Gannawarra received 19 mm with only minor problems occurring and farmers hoped the rain would come in handy.
The Kerang East area received more than 37 mm, causing salt drains to fill and paddock inundation.
Tragowel recorded 76 mm and local flooding was the main problem. Mystic Park received 500 with farmers using pumps to clear the excess water off their land.
The heavy rain fall caused most farmers various problems but all were confident that they could overcome this latest bout of flooding and resume normal farming activities without too much disruption.
