2022 in Review – May – Wilson selected to play for Victoria

YOUNG Kerang bowler Kane Wilson will don the Big V in July after being selected in the Victorian Bowls U18 State Boys Team.

A strong performance at the State Championships last month in Bendigo set Wilson up for his selection, and he is excited to represent his state.

“It is exciting to be given the opportunity to play and represent Victoria,” he said.

Wilson has been playing bowls for four years and was first introduced to the sport when his father began playing at the Kerang Bowling Club.

“I watched him and I said to my mum and dad, ‘I’m going to give it a go’,” he said.

“I went down to the local bowls club and signed up to play on the weekend.”

Bowls very much runs in the family, with his uncle and aunty also playing for Kerang, however Wilson makes sure to do his homework to improve his game in any way he can.

“I watch it on the television and look at how they play and their strategies,” he said.

The Victorian side will compete against Tasmania across July 4-6, with the current team of seven to be whittled down to five for the Australian Championships at the end of September.

For Wilson, this would be a fantastic opportunity, with the bowler keen to see how far he can progress in the sport.

“I am always trying to be a better bowler,” he said.

“I want to get to the top and one day I hope to play for Australia.”

Wilson also plays footy and likes the change of pace that bowls provides.

“It’s a slow-paced game, very different to footy,” he said.

“It is entertaining and you can play with everyone of all ages.

“You could play with 80 year olds right through to 10 year olds.”

Despite still being young, Wilson has got a good head on his shoulders and appreciates the support he has received so far.

“I’d like to thank my dad and mum for taking me to Pennant and all the tournaments throughout the last few years,” he said.

“Also everyone else in the community for being there supporting me throughout my journey.”
