2022 in Review – June – Jetty for Kangaroo Lake

BOATING and fishing enthusiasts who frequent Kangaroo Lake will be soon have their experience made a little bit better with the addition of a new jetty.

As part of the Victorian Government’s Structural Maintenance Grants Program as part of the Better Boating Fund, the Gannawarra Shire received $240,000 to provide a new fixed jetty at Kangaroo Lake.

Gannawarra Shire Council’s projects and property manager Wade Williams said the new structure will be a replacement for the former jetty at the northern end of Kangaroo Lake, which was closed in 2020 after inspections found it was damaged by wave action.

“Residents and lake users identified the need for an improved jetty at the northern end of Kangaroo Lake during the engagement for the Gannawarra Waterfront Masterplans, developed in 2018 and 2019,” Mr Williams said.

“This fixed jetty structure will provide residents and visitors to the popular location a fishing platform, as well as a connection to the lake for recreational water users.”

Minister for Fishing and Boating Melissa Horne said that Victorian’s boating licences and recreational vessel registration fees are what have allowed the government to re-invest in boating infrastructure across the state.

“These grants will ensure ramp managers have the funds to upgrade and maintain their facilities, also benefiting the thousands of Victorians who use them each year by improving accessibility and enhancing safety,” Ms Horne said.

Chair of Victorian recreational fishing peak body VR Fish, Robert Loats, said the group fully supports the building of a new fixed structure on Kangaroo Lake.

“The lake is subject to heavy winds and breaks up all the time, so it is highly important that a new structure is implemented,” Mr Loats said.
