New mayor for Gannawarra Shire

GANNAWARRA Shire has a new mayor with Cr Ross Stanton elected at the mayoral vote.

Cr Stanton, who was first elected to council in 2020, is the first Murray Ward representative to be mayor since Don Harris in 2003-04.

Kerang hay fire will cost more than $1 million

FIREFIGHTERS have remained on the scene of a Kerang hay shed fire that started on Melbourne Cup day after strong winds caused the blaze to spread.

The fire, on Kerang-Koondrook Road, was noticed about noon and 26 units were called to respond.

Day for paddle steamer heritage

KOONDROOK’S paddlesteamer heritage was celebrated late to coincide with the centenary of PS Alexander Arbuthnot – the last paddlesteamer to be built at Koondrook.

The Koondrook Development Committee brought the 100th birthday celebration to life.

Christmas fun starts early

KERANG’S Christmas celebrations kicked off on Friday with the inaugural Kerang Traders Christmas promotion launch festival.

Residents gathered on Victoria Street from 5pm to make the most of extended shopping hours and market stalls to find Christmas bargains.

Murray markers missing, says skipper

HUGE stretches of the Murray River remain without vital navigation aids after the October 2022 floods, according to one navigator.

Gunbower Island resident Tuesday Browell, who is drifting downstream in a solar-powered craft, says most of the 2km markers needed by most river users were washed away last year.

Shire backs report on road ‘disgrace’

AN underfunded state of disrepair.

That is how regional Australian roads have been described in report that has called on the Federal and state governments to step in and take some of the burden off local councils.

Shelter at Turf Club all set

The long awaited new shelter for the Kerang Turf Club at Alexandra Park was recently completed at a cost of more than $250,000.

Funds to build the structure came from several sources including a grant from Gannawarra Shire Council, to the tune of $100,000.
