Former local police officer and one-time citizen of the year Andrew Neil has been doing the rounds in the Swan Hill area recently.

He has now returned to us as Sergeant Neil.

Congratulations on the promotion, Andrew.

Chum Chamberlain has been busy at Sporties during the shutdown.

He has had a few helpers and new carpet has been laid throughout the club.

The Kelly gang’s ute has been seen parked in Wellington Street.

Let’s hope that we can get into the club to see the flash new look sooner rather than later.

*******

Hall’s Hardware has been running a competition for the best home project during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The time at home has transformed many local gardens and we now see them in a much neater condition than they were prior to the virus.

*******

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a few shops in town change their hours of operation, and some have closed for a certain period.

Hopefully all businesses have been able to source the federal government JobKeeper benefits and receive the best possible support from the local community. It is interesting to see people in the street keep to the 1.5 metre social distancing rules. Great job.

*******

The community will miss a few great local people who have passed away during the lockdown, with social distancing preventing what would usually be some very large funerals. Now 30 mourners are permitted at a funeral.

Kevin Parkes, former Murrabit FC player and president, passed away last week.

Sympathy to his family and friends. He was a man to be admired.

*******

Footballers who are missing the game can now get out and have a kick with nine teammates as long as the social distancing is still practiced.

Whether they eventually get a game played or not is of little concern at this stage, so long as they can have a kick.

Hopefully this will help fill the void.

*******

The president and secretary of the Barham Angling Club are both very happy that they are now permitted to wet a line.

It was noticed that the club secretary was out-fished by her grandchildren following the relaxation of the restrictions.

*******

Former Kerang resident Keith Dickson was seen in town earlier this week.

Keith is looking extremely fit, sharp as a tack and was very keen to talk about football or his brand new great grandson, Ollie.

Ollie was born to Megan and Travis Matheson last week. Congratulations.

Former coach of Kerang Footy Club, Travis is currently the coach at Eaglehawk and would be very keen for footy to start.

*******

Victoria and Scoresby Streets have been resurfaced. Very smooth.

Hope that everyone will be careful as currently the lines have not been painted on.

Perhaps Sergeant Neil could let us know if U-turns are permitted in Victoria Street prior to the lines being painted?

Sorry Sergeant Neil, just a thought!

*******

No wonder the world is currently in so much trouble, as Roger Riley, Geoff Pay, Don Ross, Tom Mullen and Dean Hayden haven’t been able to have their usual 10am meeting at the Sporties to solve the world’s problems.

The 5pm meeting at the Royal, which included Peter Colville, Paul Laughlin, Hans Krug and Rat Conlan is also off the table.

This committee could always get the numbers for a quorum.

Social distancing would have prevented both groups from finding another meeting place, but the same refreshments would most likely be partaken of somewhere in the desired time slot.

*******

There is some road work being undertaken at the entry to the Cohuna Footy Ground.

This will look fantastic and will surely please the local gate keepers at the club.

All we need now is for a season to start.

*******

Poor old Trev Treacy over at Cohuna is no longer permitted to go to Stanton’s and have his usual morning tea due to Covid-19 restrictions.

He would do his bus run then head to Stanton’s for a cuppa each day.

The Friday betting club at Stanton’s is also on hold due to the virus.

Now Trev just stays home and annoys his lovely wife Trish.

*******

Another of the Cohuna gang is Bricky Bradley, who was helping out with the Cohuna Footy Club coaching role.

He and Tommy Toma were looking forward to a successful season with many locals coming back to the club for a real crack at the flag.

The virus has put that on hold for a while, but hopefully we can get a game or two.

Watching the AFL on telly just doesn’t quite cut it.
