Humour defeats flood fears

We heard that Serpentine has been isolated with banks on all roads entering the township.

It seems that one person coming from the north decided they could get over the bank and continue their trip. Turns out they bellied their sedan on top of the bank. Sheez!

One local decided it was out of his jurisdiction, so let the authorities handle it.

Things over Cohuna way will have settled down a bit following their disappointing loss in the grand final. With a new coach in Tyson Findlay appointed already (is that right?), they will be looking forward to another great year in 2023.

If you ever hear anyone say that Dana Fowler can’t fish, quickly inform them they need a rethink, as Dana did pretty well at the Kyalite fishing comp recently.

Prize money awarded was $1000 for the biggest fish, $500 for the longest total of their catch and then the nominated fishing club also receives $500.

Turns out that Dana won the lot. Yep. Can fish.

One local bloke said he wasn’t too concerned about the floodwater heading this way. His intention was to get a few supplies and take the caravan and nestle himself on top of Westby Hill. Can’t argue with that.

Raelene Fletcher at the Pyramid Hill Post Office seems to have been pretty busy on the phone recently. She has been getting calls from travellers passing through the area asking what roads are accessible.

Of course, Raelene handles this all with her usual efficiency.

“Watch out for the potholes at the Mincha turn off,” is her reply. Great job, Raelene.

A couple of towns have had the dirt ready to close up levee banks with the floods on the way. Last Wednesday evening, Patchell Bridge in Kerang was closed off, with truckie Tony Bloomfield just making it through in time.

The wife of a local who has been doing his share of the sandbagging said that her hubby has aged a bit since the last floods. He’d be 11 years older than last time so there is no wonder it’s catching up with him. He probably needs to slow down a bit.

A bit of water went through Bridgewater and got into the pub. Virginia and the team opened the bar last Thursday night at 5pm for beers, cheers and tears.

Pat O’Toole at the Bridgewater Bakehouse also got wet feet, but assured me that they would be open yesterday morning. It’s a great effort from all concerned to be up and going so quickly. All the best folks, and to all those who have had flood trouble.

Couple of old blokes were down at the bridge last Thursday after it was closed up, having a bit of a look. Both were saying, “Nah, it won’t go over”. Of course, we’ll wait and see, but there is a couple of assets that have been used a bit better this time – old blokes’ and locals’ knowledge.

Kurl got a call from a family member who is currently holidaying in Bryon Bay, asking if we were OK. He said the news reports he was getting were that Kerang was knackered. Had to assure him that we were doing fine, but if the banks went…
